Hello, I’m Richard S. Wright Jr., and I am a nerd. A very very lucky nerd.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’ve been an amateur astronomer, pretty much since birth. In high school and college, I used to write astronomy programs for myself. First on a Ti-99/4A, then a Commodore 64, and finally after learning Pascal and C, for DOS, Windows, you know the drill. I went to school to be a software engineer, but my hidden lurking passion was always astronomy. I dreamt of working full time making astronomy software. After a few years I eventually came to my senses from trying to create my own package in my “spare time” (what is that exactly, everyone keeps talking about it like I should have some?). First I joined Starry Night, and I helped with the Windows version and OpenGL support working remotely from Florida while teaching graphics programming at Full Sail University to gaming students. After we shipped version 4.0… <entropy occurred>… and I , along with a few other folks at Space.com (the parent company) ended up getting laid off.

RichardProfileTook me two days to get a phone interview with Steve Bisque. For a while, we played it low, and I didn’t work on TheSky, but on a whole new product (called Seeker) so-as to not really be competing with my previous employer. Well, that was way over a decade ago, and I have the greatest job in the world now. I’m an amateur astronomer… who get’s paid… to do astronomy.

There was a man name Rich who was coding for some food. Poor graphics coder, hardly had a decent scope.

Then one day he was look’n out for jobs, and up from the net came an astro-coding job…

OpenGL. C++.

Well the job didn’t take, so he looked around some more. Then the Bisques said, hey Rich you can work for us! Said, we don’t even mind if you stay in Florida, so he coded up some sims and now he works on TheSky.

Star Charts. Telescopes. CCD Camera’s…

Birdy bing bing bing, birdy bing a bing a bing bing…
