Lagoon & Trifid
05/15/2012

The Lagoon (M8) and Trifid (M20) nebulae are located deep in the milkyway in the constellation Sagittarius. The open star cluster M21 is also in this image, just to the lower left of the Trifid (the red and blue one). These are both emission nebula. That bubblegum pink color in the Lagoon is from Hydrogen Alpha light, which is a specific spectral line emitted by excited hydrogen gas.
